Plastic Bag Charges
Are these charges really necessary? Considering that almost everything purchased in the way of food items, is wrapped in plastic? In addition, Bin Bags are still plastic, sandwich bags are plastic! Or are these charges just another form of tax?
It is said that the money goes to charities? Does it? There was one report in 2017, that stated a national supermarket used £3.4 million of the money for administration??
Do charities need that money since they are given huge grants from the Government? What charities, who gets to choose?

well we the public didn't ask for all this plastic stuff ,we used to buy an bag ourselves and used to have everything wrapped in paper ,cardboard, newspaper etc .then those that ran the industry foisted all this on the public and got everyone into the now accepted norm of packaging.now were the ones vilified and now charged for embracing its use.bottled waters gotta be the biggest criminal in this ontop of the plastic bag and Styrofoam packing.if its now an environmental baddy ,just stop its production at source and go back to the older safer ways .paper ,glass bottles etc.dont just carry on with its proliferation ,and production whilst making the consumer pay for something we never asked for in the first place .we got along perfectly well before its impimentation.

The bags in Tesco were FREE today. Could hardly believe my ears!
Thought it was illegal to give them out?

Don't mind buying a PLAIN bag if I needed one, but if the bag has store advertising on it - they should pay me for using it!
Why should I pay to advertise the store ?

Yes. Plastic bag use has dropped drastically since the minimum charge was introduced. If you don't want to pay, just take an old one when you go shopping.
And exactly which charities 'get huge grants from the government'?

I agree with trying to reduce the use of plastic bags - but, while we put the prices up to 10p, in Spain this year, we were charged 2 cents per bag - no deterrent at all. It also pees me off if you buy clothes at M and S they do not wrap it up for you now, unless you pay for a plastic bag. If Primark can use paper bags, surely the other retailers can.

Well, even back in 2015, the government was giving grants of over £3 billion pounds a year to just the largest charities. That will have grown since - especially with the ludicrous ring-fenced overseas aid profligacy that the Tories like to waste taxpayers' money on.

Completely true. So as suspected, this is yet another scam introduced by the EU!

Some charities are funded by central or local government. This funding can be given directly or through a funding body such as the Arts Council. Charities may also bid for contracts to provide public services
such as providing Children's services, helping the Elderly, aiding the unemployed etc., for which they will receive grants, as well as receiving funding from other bodies.

“I see the confusion is a little bit widespread in Britain at the moment. Michael Gove for example has forgotten that the ban on plastic bags is an EU regulation,” Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt told European Parliament recently. (The Independent)

It is with exceptions, i.e if you buy fresh fruit & veg (loose) or fresh fish you can have a free bag so long as you don't put anything else in it.
