    More incidents on One Man Operated Trams

    More compelling evidence that One Man Operation is unsafe and should be abandoned, the only places that it seems to be successful are where there are multiple platform staff to ensure the safety before departure.

    There have been drive only operated trains on the Southern region since 1989 and some but not all of the stations where they stop are either unmanned or only have one member of staff on duty.

    Alikado seems keen to put our fares up massively.

    No system can protect from every incident. We've all seen stupid chancers rush the closing doors even when the train or tram has multiple staff. Merseyrail has even had staff sent to prison for drunken idiot passengers' own behaviour.

    It's not about putting fares up massively, it's the status quo. even the current system and manning levels are not flawless, and need more than the crew to operate safely, this cannot be done by a single person looking at a screen in the cab it needs different views from differing angles.

    In another incident in the South East an elderly woman with luggage struggled onto the train, the doors closed before her dog could board. Thoughtfully the train company returned the dogs body.

    Sad story but it states there were "no station guards" not train guards and the last time I was through there Borehamwood wasn't a DOO station either so looks like a case of the train guard not paying attention and no station staff.

    If one is capable of boarding a bus with a lone driver, then one is capable of boarding a train, don't you think?

    A big difference, you board the bus a couple of feet away from the driver, the door where you board the train may be 100 yards round a curve away on a congested platform, the driver will have a small PC monitor split with a dozen or more small images (3"x2") to monitor to check if it is safe to close the doors and pull away.

    Yes, but overall it is the general public who are responsible for their own safety. Crossing a road does not require a 'guard' to ensure that the traffic will stop - a person has to make that judgement for themselves.

    But there should be more station staff as opposed to having guards on trains. The stations can be totally empty of staff, and if violent people come onto the station they pose more of a threat. Staff could prevent them boarding a train and a passenger would then be at less risk.

    It is not up to the General Public to be responsible for their own safety it is the train operating companies responsibility to ensure that the train is operated in a safe and proper manner.
