There is a lot of unoccupied accommodation especially above shops. Builders & Developers are also creating a shortage to keep prices inflated.

Many of the more wealthy people have left, long ago. That is why so many of the larger houses have now been sold and turned into flats. The majority of those who have moved to Southport are from areas closer to the City of Liverpool who wished to retire to a seaside resort, where properties have become so much cheaper now. There was no assisted housing for existing flats and houses and many of those are three bedroomed and more. The only assisted housing has been on the new estates. There is no reason to keep prices inflated in Southport as there are too few people able to afford high rents - many flats are standing empty as landlords price the rent too high. Until more industry is attracted to the area to create more jobs, or more tourist attractions or a variety in shops are introduced to attract tourists and create more jobs - Southport is stagnated.

I am sorry to be dismissive of your opinions Said I didn't wish to come across the way I did.
I think the problem is society generally these days. I travel all round the country it seems to be normal for people to spit, swear and have no manners. All of which has been deteriorating over the years. Coupled with the effects of the recession and austerity has made all places outside major cities look a bit shabby.
Southport has been struggling, but it is all relative. Southport is a far nicer place than vast parts of the UK that I visit. I still think this country is in recession outside the main metropolitan areas and it will be the ending of austerity before towns will see an improvement.
Trust me I have visited some horrific places in the last few years and Southport is without doubt a lovely place to live and visit. Yes its been better, but relatively speaking it is still way better that most.

you are correct,,,southport is a shadow of its former self,,,especially the town centre, our parks etc,,,but its still a luxury town compared to most places in britain which are very frightening and shocking to visit,,you cant believe you are in britain....so we must appreciate what we still have but work on improving it....put the town centre back to how it was 30 years ago with no pedestriansed zones, free parking especially infront of the town hall, chapel st,,it was congested in past times but it was bursting with life and shoppers,,exculuding wealthy shoppers in cars is not and never will be the way to go,,the council doo gooders are to blame for the mess the town is in
