Came across 2 posts about missing dogs in the formby area :

Elsa - a large elderly female Leonberger - went missing on a walk near the Aspargus fields in Formby. She has been missing for about 9 days and needs medication. There is a £1500 reward for her.

Doubtless the owners will have signed the petition objecting to plans to keep dogs on a lead in public...

Dogs in public places should not just be on a lead, they should be muzzled as well.

Ruler, I've just been reading the Doglost website and Perdy went missing in October 2015.

Hope both dogs are soon found. If you click on Dogs Reunited on the Doglost website, you'll read about a dog called Chance that has been found after nearly 3 years. It says she was missing from Kirby and found in Formby. How wonderful for her owners.

It appears that you are not a lover of dogs as you wouldn't leave a post like that if you were. Would you care to explain to me why ALL dogs should be on a lead and muzzled in public area's? I have a very friendly dog who wouldn't harm a fly and loves everybody, I don't see why my dog and millions of other friendly dogs should suffer because of the nasty ones and denied their freedom and much needed exercise off the lead.. if I had a dog that showed any sign of being aggressive he/she would be on a lead and muzzled at all times-as I am a responsible dog owner and I have had a few arguments with irresponsible owners and told them to get their dog muzzled etc I find your post offensive and want to know the specific answer if you have one

Your dog may be friendly but that doesn't necessarily mean that small children wouldn't be scared or intimidated by it coming right up to them at face level in a public place.
How is anyone else supposed to know that the dog approaching them is friendly?

I agree that all dogs should be on a lead and muzzled in public places. Not simply for the safety of the public, but for the safety of other dogs.

Increasingly it seems that some absolute moron will take their (usually several) dog out and it attacks a little dog. Didn't it happen in Chapel St not long ago? I would hate to witness an attack like that, or be the owner trying to pry my pet from the jaws of another dog.

Even small dogs are a danger. They're usually terrier types, naturally very excited by high pitched noises. You know, the type that babies and young children often make? I've seen it with my son's Jack Russell and his kids.

It seems that every owner thinks that their dog wouldn't harm a fly. I'm more impressed with an owner that has complete control over their dogs. As soon as I see someone walking a dog that is pulling on their lead, I know that owner isn't in control. Which is most of them. So if you want your dog to run freely, why not campaign for designated areas where dogs can do just that, in safety.

If my dog was in any way a threat to anybody then it wouldn't be off a lead period. Dogs have been able to run free in parks ,wood's and beaches for years and now all of a sudden it shouldn't be allowed! If dogs don't have proper exercise do you not think that would make them very frustrated and therefore may become bad tempered after having the freedom, just a thought.
I have heard of different colour leads to identify if a dog is a threat, red being do not approach, yellow being caution and green is friendly, I think this is a really good idea. I personally believe that if a dog is nasty it should be muzzled,it should be lead walked and not off a lead at all and shouldn't be on a park where other (friendly) dogs would roam up to them and maybe get bitten.

This is always an topic that splits the community.

To be reasonable I think there should be places where dogs can be off lead, but I also think there should be places free from dogs. I think that is the aim of the council.

I am pleased that Nightbird (a brave person) has had arguments with irresponsible owners, presumably they would also claim that their dog 'Wouldn't hurt a fly'.

I don't agree that all dogs should be muzzled though, except for dangerous breeds and they shouldn't be kept as pets anyway.

"I have heard of different colour leads to identify if a dog is a threat, red being do not approach, yellow being caution and green is friendly,"

I have heard of this , and that scrots will also use the system to identify what your dog is like with out having to approach you first ..

again my dogs stay on leads unless on an a dog exercise area , muzzles are also used with discretion ....
always reverse to see what you have run over ...
