It would have been better to have made it a 3 part test, the second limiting the scope on say speed, basic driving and maintenance, the third part motorway and speeds of 50 mph plus, I would also beef up the therory side.

I'm certain that if I were to sit the theory today I'd fail .

You learn from experience unfortunately many new drivers think they know it all. Then thier decision making is effected.

I think the driving test needs a big overhaul.
The test should be longer, anyone can get lucky and drive well for an hour.
Teaching a new driver to drive on a motorway can only be a good thing.
I'm fed up of the amount of drivers who have poor road positioning, ie...
They're turning right at a junction and instead of being upto the centre white lines they are sat more to the left so anyone wanting to turn left can't.
The traffic lights at the YMCA, you have cars going straight on but they place themselves all over the road, KEEP TO THE LEFT.
Are there too many road signs on the road?

Agree....Letting some fool loose on our busy motorways, who's only had 10 or 20 hours experience from scratch is a bad idea. I can see where this came from and yes it has some merit, but would either make it like Alikado suggests. Or maybe have the instructor drive, whilst talking through his every move with the student.
An alternative would be a motorway driving simulator. To first practice, then take a simulated motorway test where unexpected stuff happens. E.g. escaped cows roaming ahead, a truck pulls out without indicating, a tyre blows out somewhere, a trailer wheel comes off careering across lanes, etc....Ensure candidates are up to it, before risking other road users safety.

I've only passed one driving test in my life and that will be the same one you passed.

I think the best solution would be that after passing their driving test, people have to then have motorway driving lessons and pass a further shorter test to prove their competence on the motorway.
I also think that all drivers should be re-assessed every 10 years and bad drivers forced to have tuition to cure their bad habits and re-sit their driving test. Young drivers tend to be a bit fast & reckless but older drivers tend to slip into bad habits (not indicating, poor road positioning, poor lane discipline etc.). Sight tests should be done at the same time - an old neighbour of mine drove with cataracts!!!
I'm only happy when it rains....
