Once took a car to Greece, a full family in the car, two ferry crossings and it still cost more than hiring a car for three weeks plus the flights. Had some great stops - Normandy beaches, Bayeaux, Giverny, Lake Garda and Venice but it was more a touring holiday than a Greek villa holiday.
Horses for courses, I suppose. We’ve been going to Spain by car for the past 20 years or so. Yes, it does cost a little bit more, but we always feel that we’re on holiday from the moment we leave the house. There’s no restriction on what you can take with you, unlike the airport, where you’ll be fleeced for taking a single suitcase. Driving through Spain is an absolute pleasure, quiet, high quality roads, and some beautiful scenery, and the real beauty is, you don’t have mix with lots of obnoxious, selfish people you always find at Airports.

I have to say that the golden age of air travel (and rail travel, and 'motoring') are long gone.
We like exploring cities, mainly in Europe, but can't waste at least a day either end of the trip for driving, but the whole process of airport parking, security etc etc has taken the shine off things.
