Kew Woods Decimated
Shocked to drive down Town Lane this week and see a team of foresters has clear-felled the whole woods! Those mature trees in front of the Hospice were at least 100yrs old and all that remained of the original Victorian-era Kew Gardens.
Back in the day, we used to play there and float rafts on the lake (now filled in)....Can't understand how they got permission to destroy this pocket of what had become a mini nature-reserve.

Probably more houses to be built. I played in the woods as well
It has been said that when helping people change their behaviour – “the spirit in which help is offered” is the most important aspect, more than the degree of skills and knowledge of the helper!

Its a shame when any established woodland is cut down, it shouldn't be allowed.
Especially when the government are putting plans in place to create the Northern Forest, between Liverpool and Hull. Kind of defeats the object.

Just plant some more somewhere else then.
Kew Gardens was a man made creation so it's not as if it was natural area of forestation.

The Government has been promising to plant 11 million more trees in the UK. There are far fewer trees in England in Britain than there are in all countries in the EU - we have just 10% of tree coverage, far less than there has ever been before. Few people understand the importance of these trees - they act to keep pollutants out of the air, they absorb carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, they provide many insect habitats which in turn affect the food chain for humans. They also provide timber that is at present having to be imported. This is a tiny island - it can only site so many buildings, What happens when every bit of space has been used for housing? How pleasant will a concrete jungle be, with all wild life at an end? How much longer can the UK survive as a green and pleasant land?

They have only just matured! It takes 100 years for trees to mature.

Probably one of the most stupid things I've ever read on here.

Don't suppose any of our illustrious councillors have any answers as to why this has happened and how planning permission was granted .

Nov. 2017:
Tree Preservation Orders
A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is an Order made by the Council, giving legal protection to trees or woodland. A TPO prevents cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilful damage or destruction of trees (including cutting roots) without the Council's permission.
Anything that would normally be called a "tree" may be covered by a TPO. There is no minimum size but bushes or shrubs cannot be covered by a TPO. In certain circumstances, fruit trees can also be protected, providing they offer reasonable public amenity. The purpose of the TPOs is to protect trees for the public's enjoyment. Trees protected by TPOs should normally be visible from a public place but in exceptional circumstances other trees may be protected.
So obviously, even if the government are pressing to preserve trees - our council have given their permission to have these cut down!

A conservation order protects an area containing trees.
What about that pond and pub in Kew Woods?

However, this area isn't a designated nature reserve, or conservation area, and doesn't appear to be covered by a tree preservation order, as a quick perusal of Sefton's website showed...http://maps.sefton.gov.uk/webmaplaye...trol_container
So, the councillors didn't need to give permission...judging by the desription, it would however have needed a felling licence from the Forestry Commission. They would have wanted some assurances of replanting/reforestation...unless the site is to be redeveloped for something else.

Sefton Council is the ROOT of all evil, and will do anything to make money for themselves, and sod what people say,as they think they have the power to do anything, and WILL go ahead and do it,and it does'nt matter what the people of Sefton think, even if there was a petition or law to abide with, they will just go ahead and do whatever it takes to make a profit.Once they start something, then there is no going back,as it is too late to repair ANY of the damage that they have caused. As it is a waste of time appealing to them,as it just falls on deaf ears every time an appeal or petition is forwarded to them.
