Is it true that the Lib Dems have banned men from standing in Southport in June?
Is it true that the Lib Dems have forced an all-women shortlist on Southport ahead of the general election?
As a woman I'm incredibly passionate about the issue of women in politics and I don't think that there are anywhere near enough females in parliament.
Having said that, major political parties should not be discriminating against males in this way.

You need to change your thread title, I thought I was going to have to sit through June including in the toilet.

Equality should mean equality. Positive discrimination is still discrimination.
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants, they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

The key unknown is whether it was a "ban" or just they thought their best shortlist with a chance of winning were female. Cllr Maguire is probably their best candidate and there are no standout males in the ones we hear the most from.
Either way my opinion is if you want local change pushed by your MP a miniority party may not be the best one, could be one reason it's not easy to pin many successes on our current MP.

The majority of Lib Dem councillors in Southport are male, so I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a single viable male candidate.
Besides, the decision to impose an All-Woman Shortlist on Southport was made at a national level, arbitrarily:
"As Chair of Southport local party I should point out that we are undergoing a selection process in accordance with Party rules. In accordance with the decision of Federal Conference that will be conducted using an All Woman Shortlist (AWS)."

It's just basic LibDem sexism. Another reason not to vote for them.
(You don't have to be a councillor to stand as an MP, btw.)

Interesting, I did not know that. However whether males on the shortlist or not I do feel they would've come out with the same answer as I can't see them wanting to take the risk of Cllr Dawson given his ability to polarise opinion.

Smacks of desperation to me. If the eventual candidate turns out to be the best person for the job, then that will be a lucky coincidence.
It hardly does anything for 'women's rights' (a phrase that should be regarded as archaic in the 21st century). It's similar to the Tories waving around Thatcher and May as representing a forward looking equality party.

Yes, and their nastiness has always been around: who can forget when Peter Tatchell was running for Labour and Simon Hughes from the LibDems campaigned under the slogan "the straight choice". Took Hughes years to come out of the closet himself, of course.... but how despicable of the LibDems to think that it was acceptable to use that slogan. Grotty, unprincipled little party.

Oh! I don't know! I think the world would be a better place without any men at all!

Unfortunately as with the original Liberal Party, they have relied upon a slightly odd mixture of "local personalities", a few loyal constituencies and people who have drifted to the right or the left of the mainstream parties. They blew it for me when they went into the 2010 coalition with only two red lines - a genuinely revolutionary commitment to a PR referendum which they allowed to develop into a pointless exercise asking a question to which they answer would always be "no" and student fees - and we know how that ended.

Well you've clearly forgotten.
Simon Hughes never campaigned as "the straight choice". At least one leaflet described the contest as a "straight choice" between Liberal and Labour, which is something completely different. As the Liberal and Labour candidates between them secured 84% of the total votes cast it was also obviously correct.

Read 'The Battle for Bermondsey', Tony, to see one ugly aspect of your habitually nasty party.
