    Following Saddleworth Moor devastation

There are now serious fires burning across the moorland of Winter Hill and in the Pine Forest at Ainsdale.

Winter Hill is still burning and can be seen from Southport 4pm. There are large plumes of smoke as if there may be another fire erupted just west of Winter Hill.

Large plumes of smoke seen from the coastal road coming from Lytham St. Annes direction. There was no smoke visible from Ainsdale, possibly quickly controlled because of the fire breaks.

Now, you may or may not agree with grouse shooting, but where it is still allowed, (no longer allowed on Saddleworth Moor) the grouse moors are 'managed' by controlled burning and the creation of fire breaks etc.

This means the moorland has new growth, all the old 'dead wood' is removed by the controlled burn, thus not creating a bed of tinder underneath the heather and bracken etc.

Its that bed of tinder under the heather that enabled the fire to spread!

This afternoon we took this photo from The Ashworth Reservoir looking
    towards Bury and Winter Hill.

The Peel Monument on Harcles Hill above Ramsbottom is on the right.

There are huge amounts of peat on those moorlands - it would take an enormous amount of managing.

For decades here in Canada, where wildfires can be rampant in the Summer, controlled burns were always carried out. Thanks to complaints from tourism & environmental groups, plus residents complaining about the smoke, they cut back on the burns. Since then there have been many more fires burning for months on end. I'm all for the environment and tourism, but people lives come first. Not to mention the millions it costs. And if you don't like smoke from controlled burns, either buy a house in the city, or don't complain when a wildfire runs wild for months and months and your house is uninhabitable.

Forest and moorland is meant to burn, that's natures way of replenishing it. I've seen many forests soon after a fire, and you would swear that nothing would ever grow again. Within no time at all there's new growth, and even flowers that only grow and bloom after a fire.

As man has encroached upon wild land, we think we can change the ecosystem. We can't, nor should we. Burn baby, burn!

We walked from the Cheeseden Valley to Ashworth Moor all Tinder dry.
Every now and again found a pile of empty plastic bottles and cans left by trippers.
No glass-we would have buried them from the sun.

The Winter Hill fire was arson, an arrest has been made.

A third fire has broken out in Greater Manchester, also near Bolton.

Trains @ Crewe and Carlisle have been seriously disrupted by lineside fires also.

That third fire, near Bolton, must have been the other lot of smoke visible from the Coastal Road that I mentioned.

A major blaze has been reported on the dunes in St Annes, with thick smoke blowing along the seafront and over roads.

This afternoon fire chiefs ordered crews to withdraw because two separate fires from Winter Hill itself and Scout Road in neighbouring Bolton converged.

I checked that report so blaming you.

There is a Scout road in Bolton near Winter Hill.
It is not the same as the Scout Moor above Ramsbottom Bury.

Today we can see the smoke above Bolton from Bury.
I have a good view of Scout Moor from our house thankfully it looks
    ok.

Huh! Don't blame me! I got that from the local Manchester paper - I do not know the area, or at least the names of the areas.

By the way, one dick...d neighbour is tonight burning rubbish in an open fire in her back garden! How's that for stupidity?

Oh gosh sorry old bean I must have deleted the 'not'(blaming)you on edit.

I checked the report on the Independent got the geography wrong.
    that has now been fixed.

Winter Hill and Scout road is on opposite sides of a Valley.
Scout Moor easily identified by its wind farm.
