Famous Sons, Daughters, and Adopted Children Of Southport
Steve: Since you have temporarily (I hope) abandoned the idea of a new Past Spot, how about a new spot with information on the many famous people who were born, brought up , live, or lived in Southport. We have had occasional threads listing these, but I think the number and variety of notable residents, past and present, is of interest to many, and worthy of a more structured and prominent place on this website. You could include links to further information on particular individuals.

Famous Sons
I think John Betjeman & Anthony Quayle lived Southport when they were young.
Brendan Bracken taught in the area.
I heard that Edward V11 used to meet with one of his mistresses in a house in Queens Rd that has recently been knocked down. Has anyone else heard this story?

Jimmy: Somewhere on this site there is an old thread that lists famous Southport residents past & present - that might be a good place to start.
Phil: I havent heard that tale about HRH before - what's the origin of it?

Jimmy - I've just done a search and found the thread - its called "stars from Southport past & present" and was started by "nipper-jones" in the Chat Spot.

Wilfred Pickles lived in Southport for a while around 1940.
Arthur Pedlar - the clown
Didn't P T Barnum's (circus fame) 2nd wife (Nancy Fish) come from Southport-Portland St?
frog- who said: "a sucker is born every minute"
"thowing your hat in the ring"
flyp- My brother who lives in Queens Rd told me the HRH story. He probably heard it in the pub that is opposite the house.

Thanx Flyp, it was David Le Mare who used to hang around town, I remember when he drove his Mexico into a brick wall in 1969 at 60 miles an hour.

I used to go out with a girl who had a famous grandfather from Southport, I can not say his name as she would kill me but shall we say that he used to keep people" hanging "around.
