Ex visiter staff
Just doing a check on my friend of 40 odd years ago, the late Derek Brown of the Graudian and came across this pic with a whole lot of names from the past at the Southport Visiter. Remember Julian Desser, Stuart Isenberg (?) Ethel, Steve Hirst, Raphael Callaghan Etc etc. Can someone tell me what happened to them all?

One of the named persons is banned from this forum, not sure if it is a permanent one, or a long 'holiday' for being a naughty boy

Hi Johnny, nice to know that you’re still around!
I don’t know if you remember me, but I used to work in the accounts dept at the Visiter but, as a friend of Raf’s, I was always popping into the sub-editors dept for a quick chat.
Like Raf, I was heavily into music, and on a few occasions we brought our guitars into work and had a bit of a jam session. Remember those?
Raf moved to near Conwy in North Wales a while back. He’s still into his music and even played with the wonderful Bonnie Raitt last year!
I have been in touch with Neil Morton and Alan Burrows ( were they at the Visiter during your time there?)
Back to the sub-editors dept. I used to think that there were so many interesting characters in that department. Unlike the very staid accounts section!

Are u frank from pay office. Do u recall I used to ask for my pay in ten bob notes because it made the eight pounds last longer? Did raft continue in journalism of just go straight into music. I remember he had something to do with cat Stevens. I worked with Alan burrows here in Melbourne for a number of years though I never worked with him at the Visiter. He left to go up north to Queensland and we lost touch. It also worked for a very brief time at the Melbourne sun with pat o,neill from forMby times

Hi Johnny
yes it is Frank from the pay office.
Raf stayed in journalism until he retired some years ago. I’m not sure of the sequence of his jobs, but he worked at the Visiter, the Evening Post ( Preston) and the, finally, the Liverpool Echo. I say finally because he did a few stints at the Visiter and the Echo ( i.e. leaving and coming back ).
Pat O’Neil! I had it in my head that he emigrated to New Zealand. Did I get that wrong?
Melbourne! I’ve had "a thing” about Melbourne since the late 1950s when my big athletics’ hero Herb Elliott lived there. In those days, Herb would train at Portsea. Do you know that area? John Landy, another of my heroes, was also from around Melbourne ( Geelong?)
Only the other week, I was watching a big Triathlon event in Melbourne on Tv, and the city looked terrific.
Here are the email addresses of Raf and Alan Burrows.

Hi John, Remember me I started at the Formby Times in 1968 when you were news editor there? Derek Brown retired from the Guardian to Herefordshire but died in 2011 . And I spoke to Ethel Brew in 2000 at the weekly newspaper she was editing in Chesham Buckinghamshire shortly before she retired.Don't know if you remember but she married Alan Brew but they later divorced. She has a son I think he's called Daniel. I have a feeling that Julian Desser runs his own PR company but don't know what happened to Steve Hirst. Muriel Kealt was at a Crosby Herald reunion in 2000 that I went to, but she sadly died a couple of years later. There's a photo on the Southport Forum taken at Cliff Bircall's leaving do. He went to the Ormskirk Advertiser. Anyway you are seated at a table with Ethel and Derek Brown is there in a bow tie. Steve Hirst and Julian Desser are also in shot. Have a look it will jog the old memory bank.I married Colin Brown who worked in the Ormskirk Office with Derek Woods. We eventually moved to London and became Parliamentary journalists. I worked for PA for 27 years and Colin was on the Guardian Independent and Sunday Telegraph. We are both now retired. Cheers Mandy.
