    Disrespectful drivers killing someones pet.

There are some disrespectful drivers about,as I had to remove a mainly white with black patches cat from Roe Lane early this morning, most probably a young child or persons pet,as it had been ran over, and left near the middle of the road,as the driver who did it did'nt even have the common sense to move the poor animal to the side of the road ? Fortunately no other vehicles had hit it's stricken corpse.
Noticed it when carrying a customer whilst working, and stopped my vehicle to put it next to a tree, out of the road. There was a broken black and silver collar with a phone number disc on,but I will be ringing the number from it later,as it was 3.15am and far too early to wake the owner with the sad news of their pet..

PS ; I know it is NOT against the law If your cat is hit by a car,as the driver is not liable under the criminal damage act for any injury or death, unless there is proof that the collision was caused by driver negligence.
The day that God created Akita's......He just sat back and smiled

    Sad

It should be made illegal to hit any animal with a car, whether it's a dog, cat or any other creature.

One of my neighbours had their cat run over a few years ago and the perpetrator was never found.

To be fair if you hit a cat, particularly in the dark, you might not even be aware you've hit it

Illegal to hit or illegal not to report it?
Would you give people a criminal record for running over a hedgehog?

Both, if anyone sees an animal in the road or on the road, some people may deliberately drive at it. There are some mad people still left out there you know.

What about those who don't see them?

"Some mad people" there are lots of mad people especially behind the wheel of a car or on a motorbike, unfortunately the Police are powerless to enforce existing laws without adding the extra one of "failing to miss a non road savvy animal" do you suggest also that all drivers carry a spade so as to be able to carry out a simple funeral for said animals.

Dogs regularly used to get knocked over until the law demanded they be on a lead when in the street. Perhaps a similar law should be brought in for cat owners. Unfortunately unless you want to confine the animal to the house they are going to get run over when left to wander wherever they wish.

    loose dogs

I still see the odd occasional loose dog while out and about. Some people in Southport and surrounding areas walk around with them off their leads.

As for cats being run over, of course you would be able to tell if you've hit something. It would be great if people could move it to the side of the road. As I said before in another post, a neighbour's cat was hit on Liverpool Rd a few years ago and that was left on the pavement at the side of the road and not just left in the gutter. No idea how it got there because whenever I saw it, it was sat in the neighbours front garden or on the wall. It never really went far. All I'd be able to gather is that it followed someone.

Spot on, responsibility lies with the owners to ensure their cat doesn't wander on to a main road, if they cant be bothered then accept the consequences. Friend of mine had cause to slam his brakes on to avoid a cat which was running across the road, as a result the car behind him shunted into his rear end which caused him no amount of hassle and grief. Would I brake for an animal? If I had the time to check my rear view mirror first to make sure it was clear for me to brake, Yes, if not, no chance.

As you said there are some mad people about and unfortunately there is no intelligence investigation before being able to get yourself a dog, some of the owners aren't fit to walk the little black bag of poo around the streets let alone a dog.
