Make no mistake, as a cyclist, if Mr Ausard decided to try what he is suggesting to me, the self appointed enforcing would be pooing in a plastic bag for life once he's removed my crumpled bike from there.

That having been said, there is no excuse for cycling along chapel street. In my view it would be ideal to be marked out for mixed usage, but it's not and so cyclists should not use it.

Funnily enough I was talking on the train to some fellow cyclists today, and we were discussing how much safer if feels cycling in London, with mutual respect between drivers and cyclists, with proper provision for both vs. the provincial town in which we live, full of "little" men with big cars and vans who have something to prove re. cyclists.

Look under the roadsigns section. There are a couple there that apply. A) A blue circle with pedestrians/cyclist side by side and separated by a vertical white line, indicating a 'split' path for both types of user. B) A similar sign but without the vertical white line, indicating 'shared' use of a pavement. Also a blue circle showing just a cyclist, indicating cyclists 'only', which sadly is frequently disregarded by pedestrians/dog-walkers etc.

Re: Govt advice about using a pavement 'out of fear of traffic'. True, that is not in the H.C. The advice was issued directly to Chief Police Officers by the DfT at the time the fixed penalty was introduced. Sensibly, this allows officers on the ground the power of discretion, depending on circumstances.

As examples: You won't get far ploughing at speed through crowded pavements like Lord St's on a bike, the police certainly won't stand for that!....However, you should be perfectly ok riding from Southport to Ormskirk on the pavement of the busy A570. Not only does this dramatically improve safety of a rider, but it also gets bikes out of the way of heavy traffic, avoiding impeding the traffic flow.

I'm not on about where there are special signs or laid out paths, I'm on about cyclists on pavements in residential areas where some pavements are about 6 feet wide. Add to that there may be cars parked partially on which is also illegal and then you are walking down, say a young mum with a pram and she sees a cyclist on the pavement coming towards her. She's not gonna walk in the road just to satisfy the cyclist now...! Is she?

And the cyclist also happens to be travelling with the flow of traffic. Let's do the rational bit. Cyclist !! Get on the road !!

It comes down to individual circumstance and interpretation of the guidance......In this case, if there's intimidating traffic on the road, cyclist should give way to the pram, i.e. come to a halt and let the pram through. However, if that residential road has little or no traffic, there's really no good reason to be on the pavement anyway.

Let's not forget the many ladies who cycle sedately (e.g. to the local convenience store and back) using shopper-bikes on the pavement. If that option was taken away from them, a fair proportion would use the car instead, simply adding to the problem of our busy congested roads.

as a past club cyclist and from family of club cyclists, but yearnfully sad that health isues have curtailed my pleasure of that pastime for now! have to say that if the cycling community are to regain respect from the denegrators ,then maybe its time they observed the same rules of the road pretty much like they used to!!!!ive never seen so much careless and self endangering riding from cyclists these days,as well as danger to the public on foot as well,ad this includes also just common decent road manners to other traffic ,along with the so called club cyclists enthusiasts too boot.this needs to be brought home to those enthusiasts by their peers as well,if any change of the them and us that is now actually dangerously pervading from both sides of the argument.cycling is a wonderfull pastime its such a shame its now become such a game of shame to all on both sides.but then again doesn't this also applay to all the other ways where living these days to boot.the shitty mememe and sod you all iwant society that pervades our everyday lives.weve lost that fundamental gift of respect, that makes being someone of . hey worthy of respect.costs nowt to be nice nowt to smile but makes another feel worthwhile you cant buy that!
