Unlike you, I don't holiday in Spain on a regular basis (Gran Can once in a blue moon) and therefore my Spanish is non-existent. But from what I have read he didn't actually declare independence. He declared that he wanted to negotiate a solution with the Spanish central authorities, but that he is willing to accept the mandate that he is given by the people of Catalonia regarding independence. Not quite what you state? The result is that he postponed a final decision and bought more time.

Then I stand corrected , just heard a flash whilst driving home . One of the reasons I holiday in Spain so frequently is that I have a place there .
