Can you remember
Does anyone remember or know about -
An elderly male shopkeeper was murdered on Eastbank Street sometime around the 60's - I think it was a tobacconist shop. I believe the old man was battered around the head, money was stolen.

I remember it, around 1964 I think it was. His name was Mr Griffiths. He did have a shop on Eastbank Street bridge, but the brutal murder took place in his house on Bridge Street. I'm not sure how old he was. To me he looked quite old, but I was only young at the time. I don't believe they ever found the killer. So sad.

I was working in a factory behind 159 Eastbank St when he was killed. All the lads were regulars in his shop, he was a really nice old guy.
We were all interviewed by the police.
Word was they knew who did it but could not prove it at the time.
I was about 17 I think, which would make it1962,

It was the Ormesher sisters, and will always stick in my mind. It was in 1956, I was almost 9 years old at the time. We lived in a rural area, about 5 miles from Ormskirk. The police went house to house in Ormskirk and area taking voluntary fingerprints from all men. I watched in the kitchen and was totally intrigued by the whole performance, so the policeman took my fingerprints too... I was delighted!
I remember their sweet shop on Church Street, two sweet old (well, old to me at the time) ladies. I didn't know the details at the time, but when I was older I read what had happened to them. Horrendous. They were gentler times back then, and the whole community was shocked and frightened.
