Less to do with F/wits more to do with people buying online.
As you say, A sign of the times.
I've recently taken up 3d printing as a hobby, You can't buy the machines or filament anywhere that I'm aware of apart from online. The bulk of what you do buy is from China.

In Blackburn there is a 3D-Workshop where you can create your images for free and receive help and advice. There are 3D Printers at CPC Farnell in Preston.
It is far easier to blame the internet for every problem these days but any business person who has even the tiniest bit of imagination can make a business work in Southport. Barbers, Hairdressers, Polish grocers, Restaurants, Coffee shops and nail boutiques are not shopping attractions! When people go shopping - they generally want to purchase something there and then. They do not want to wait a couple of weeks to purchase something they cannot see nor try on, paying additional postage for the privilege.

Well that's handy, only 20 to 40 mile to travel to get a filament, Assuming these places actually sell the filament itself.
If it was so easy to set up a business in town there wouldn't be this issue would there? You do talk some hypothetical crap.
Where do you shop online that takes a couple of weeks for items to arrive?
I could order some filament today and have it tomorrow.
Right, just had a quick look on CPC, PLA filament is £38.39 for 750g I pay £16 for 1kg delivered free next day..... and there is your problem.
Now if it was in Southport and cost lets say £20 to £24 I'd buy it locally. But I'm never going to pay the equivalent of £51.18 AND drive to Preston and back for the same product.

Fingers crossed its House of Fraser, but given their problems, the managers who have just been sacked, and the store closures, I suspect opening another store would be way down their list of priorities at present.
My view on the problems of retail is that its not only the internet but the high prices of rents. Rents are the biggest expense they have. The rents have been high because of the boom years before 2008, companies were buying the buildings with mortgages, only to see their value depreciate and subsequent rental income as a result. However because they were investments usually with borrowings there is very little scope to reduce rents. At the same time the companies have been hit with the rise in workforce costs such as ERNIC, pension contributions of an employee, and wage levels. The goods they are buying are now more expensive to purchase because of the pound being devalued due to brexit, The devaluing of the pound has also hit transport costs because the costs of buying fuel is now more as well as fuel is sold in dollars. This in addition to peoples spending habits now being "online" have presented a perfect storm of problems for the high street.

Sports Direct are considering a merger between House of Fraser & Debenhams so if it is not likely to stay long. If its successful would that be the end of Debenhams on Lord St?

He also owns 29.7% of Debenhams, at 30% he is required to put in an offer for the whole business.

Are they refurbishing every floor? Or just the ground floor? This may indicate if its long term or just a Christmas pop up.
