I heard a great quote once and somehow think it was one of Thatchers.
It went something like this
If you are over 30 and under 65 and you find yourself standing at the bus stop, you have lost in life.

Apparently misattributed to Thatcher:

Don't be like that, like I said I thought it was one of Thatcher's and it went something like, nothing personal just a bit of fun.

I have had many friends who became bus drivers and once considered it myself, one particular friend used to hate it with awkward customers hurling abuse at him and some even spitting at him so much so that they are issued with DNA kits and cctv to aid prosecution in extreme cases, he got so stressed with it he had a heart attack and after a while and a medical he was allowed to return to his job, he really hated it and packed it in to be a delivery driver just before this latest bought of strikes started. he reported to me the company treated him badly and would often give him his holiday times at times that didn't suit him, he said its not as cushy as it looks driving round on the early busses and empty night busses and is happy to have packed it in.
A few of my mates drove the old iconic route masters in London and one particular pre cctv time a passenger spat at my mate thinking he would get away with it, in an instant the drivers little door opened and the passenger was thumped that hard and launched off the bus onto the pavement to the cheers of the rest of the responsible respectful passengers.

Apocryphal tale I'm afraid. The whole bus experience in Southport was profoundly depressing, especially when you find its barely cheaper than a minicab. It's not a lot better in Colchester.

Sad news really, the roads are a far better place on strike days when traffic can move freely and the air is cleaner without empty buses belching out pollution.
