Only if you intend downloading third party apps - if you get them from an apps store these have all been checked for a virus. But if you are downloading games etc., from lesser known providers then you will need a virus checker.

If you check your mail or view websites, you run the same risk as if you are on a PC.

I got rid of AVG (free) on my phone because of that, plus the battery life was absolutely hammered with it. To be honest, I think the best and safest way forward is to buy, rather than go with a free AV. You will usually find that one purchase of an antivirus will cover up to about 4 of your items, be they mobile phones, laptops, pads etc. If you go for a trial version of one of the AV's, (on your laptop/computer rather than your phone) you will probably find that if you dilly dally about when the trial period is running out, they offer you better and better deals in order to secure your custom, so it can end up costing you next to nothing in the end.

I use AVG & like a lot of people I was considering if there's actually any need for it. Then last week I heard about a new virus which effects Android phones. It takes up so much of the processors power, it can actually overheat the phones causing them to burst into flames & making the phones useless before that. So i'm back to being better safe than sorry.
