    hi john

I have this large Chinese famille rose vase , I am trying to find out how old it is, I find this Chinese area quite grey , It looks 1930-50 , could it be abit earlier?

it has a red stamped seal mark on the base (the rubber stamp kind)

    thanks

Cantonese, Rose Medallion. are also names given

Your item is Reproduction late 1970's early 1980's

and it looks like the pink is purple.

the shape of your vase is desirable, much nicer than the round vases or even the hexagon shape

If you have a red seal mark on the item. This could be anywhere on the item. This red seal mark was put on by the Chinese Government at the customs house. The bad part is that this mark is in a red dye and can easily be removed by water.

It shows the item was supposed to be made pre 1919

It has been known that customs officers can be bribed to put a seal mark on any item

    Cultural Revolution
    1966
all the antiques in China went underground.

Literally, ... being buried in the ground.

In the late 1970's they where dug up and sold world wide.
Being buried made the items a little dirty.

When the items ran out in about 1982/3 the Chineses quickly remade the items and then washed them in dirty muddy water. The soil stuck to the items and made them look old.

So items found with the red seal mark that can easily be washed off, tend to be made before 1960. They also can be a copy and a fake.
The items with the soil look, washed in dirty water are fakes and repro's. made after 1982/3

A repro vase like yours in 1983 would have sold between £70 and $150.

This would have also applied to a vase made in 1900.

It is a good decorative item, must be worth retail £150 today

    In a posh shop £450

an 18th century one...... manny, manny thousands.

    good luck
