    Redfern & Drakeford / R.H. & S.L. Plant China

I came across two tea sets in a charity shop and am wondering if anyone knows a bit more about them...

From what I can tell from reading online about pottery marks, the first pieces are remnants of a R.H. & S.L. Plant set probably circa 1898-1902. These are a cobalt blue, white, and gold pattern and appear to have been used normally. All of the pieces used to have a lovely gold lining around the rim about half of which has worn away, and the blue patterning throughout almost looks as if it has bled a bit.

The second set appears to be a Redfern & Drakeford pattern from around the same time period, probably circa 1892-1909. It is gold-rimmed, with pink and yellow roses, blue and brown foliage/garlands, and a golden handle on the cups. This caught my eye because of the size of the cups but the only similar set I can find online is for a normal sized trio! (Here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Redfern-Dr...item51c5af5c5e)

Can anyone help me to find out what patterns these are and perhaps how much they might be worth?

I've uploaded some photos of both tea sets to flickr which you can find at this link:

And there are some details below if needed. Thank you!

Saucer 2 - very small chip on underside (wear from where the saucer rests on the table)
Saucer 3 - 3 very small chips on underside (wear from where the saucer rests on the table)

Plate 2 - mark partially worn, and an imprinted 'PLANT' as well as an imprinted identifier number (Rd351548?)

    Plate 4 - impressed identifier number (Rd351548?)
Plate 5 - no impressed identifier number (Rd351548?), some slight blue spotting around underside and very small chip in underside

    ***********************************************************

    REDFERN & DRAKEFORD

4 very small (demitasse?) cups - all with written pattern number 2180, with varying numbers written underneath (these are less legible but as far as I can tell these are X, 1, 4, 4)

4 saucers - all with Redfern & Drakeford marking, written pattern number 2180 with either a 9 (possibly a 4) underneath

5 small plates - with small illegible written markings (some look like 9 or 7 but difficult to tell!)

    hi,

ref........... to the only back stamp that you show in your post.

the printed back stamp was first produced between 1881 - 1906

The facts are a bit cloudy and contradicting

between 1881- and 1898 the mark only has RHP
    your mark has "L" "B"

the back stamp I can see in your post would be pre 1898

    Plant Bros...............1889-1906
    Enoch Plant ............1898-1905
    J Plant.....................1893-1900
    R H Plant and Co.....1881 1898
    R Plant & sons ......1895 -1901
    rh and sl plant .......1908
    the ltd company tuskan
    england .................1902 1907
    made in England .............1936

    up to 1898 made china
    from 1895 earthenware

It would seem all the family members made their own items as well as making items jointly, may be even using other brothers or even the Fathers back stamps.

Looking at your cup, It is Victorian C 1898
PROBABLY PRE 1878 As from that date W D Cliff ran the business

    R & D
    REDFERN & DRAKEWOOD LTD1892 1902
    ALBION CHINA CO
    J DIMMOCK AND CO

I have found companies and it even applies to day, if a firm is running out of back stamps they just use up old back stamps.
so when you buy a set and come back a later date to buy an odd item the back stamp can be different.

so lets say the items you show the shape is the later part of the 1800.

    Now for value.

sadly, very little, the charity shops and car boot sales are full of items like this. Ranging from 10p to £1 an item

It is a shame that beautiful items like this are not appreciated.
    bootle BILL always INVOICE.
and never afraid to make a STATEMENT
