i would be grateful if you take a look at this brass horse figure i have.

i am looking for your opinion on the age of it.

the horse is solid brass , very well modeled compared to most i have seen , good detailing with the muscles and the hair and even the veins on the face.

it also has numbers punched into the base , the old style punching with block and hammer.

all this is making me think it is probably victorian???

It is post 1830 as it is a solid mold and because of the stamp can date to anywhere between 1842 to 1930, although as the machine marks are visible - it is probably closer to the later end of this scale.

Old brass has soldered seams due to the sand molding process and rarely has any stamps. You also don't ge tmachine marks on the older brass as it was all finished by hand.

My impression was it is reproduction C 1960 - 1980

but as I always say.

the antiques trade is full of opinions.

and all the opinions can all be right.

i have seen modern repro's before but they don't usually have the detailing as this and they normally are hollow cast not solid cast.

I have seen lots of solid brass items dogs, horses etc coming in from the far east.

keep us informed what your customers think.
