MP Damien Moore has become a member of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, citing Southport’s veterans as an inspiration.
In September, Damien joined fellow MPs at the Defence Academy for their induction into the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. The AFPS was created in 1987 to give Members of Parliament a taste of military life and has since expanded to include peers and MEPs. Last month, the two-day course involved rifle training, an inspection of armoured vehicles, and classes on defence and foreign policy.
Damien said: ‘I have always felt an urge to serve but speaking to our town’s veterans over the last year, I decided it was time to actually do something about it and have joined the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme.
‘The Scheme will enable me to represent my constituents and develop my understanding of our Armed Forces and the training required.’
The Southport MP will now begin the next stage of his training.
The Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme (AFPS) is a privately-run programme to give Members of Parliament and peers in the United Kingdom and members of devolved assemblies, Tynwald and British MEPs experience of the armed forces.
The objective of the scheme is to help parliamentarians understand the work of the armed forces and foster genuine personally informed contributions to participate in defence debates. MPs are neither paid for their participation or deployed during the course of their training.

How exactly is he serving?!! This isn't the TA... they are not reservists... it's not even run by the Armed Forces!
It's a privately run scheme... they never get deployed, they can't get called up... it's not even a "Dads Army" thing.
They didn't even have uniforms originally but now supply them to make them blend in and presumably feel better about pretending to be in the forces.
I have no problem with Damien wanting to get more enlighted about what those actually in the forces do... but to suggest he is also serving is quite appalling... and I doubt many who have actually served would take kindly to the suggestion.

Stupid boy.
We're all doomed.
So he's always felt the urge to serve but never got beyond the frontline at Asda.

You seem to be lacking a bit of understanding... he hasn't "signed up"... this course ISN'T part of the Armed Forces... it's an educational course for MPs on the Armed Forces, which is fine as far as it goes but it most categorically is not "serving" and suggesting otherwise is really quite wrong... also, given Damien went MIA for the vote on increasing armed forces pay increase last winter, it all rings just a bit hollow.

Oh dear! We have got our knickers in a twist haven’t we? So you don’t like people expressing their opinions? Seemed like someone was making a very valid point in their post which I’m quite sure a lot of Southport residents would agree with. Damian Moore is a complete waste of space and I’m quite certain the ‘proper’ armed forces would soon kick him out.
And on a separate note, before you launch your next tirade of verbal diarrhoea, you could at least arm yourself with a dictionary or turn your spell checker on please.

Whoa there soft lad, Moore hasn't signed up to the military in any way shape or form, incidentally in spite of propaganda from the likes of Daily Mail etc; the biggest and most savage cuts to our military has come from your beloved Tories, not from any form of left wing government, look it up when you've calmed down, you just may be surprised and possibly revise your opinions.

Well done Damien.
Whizzy is just upset that we're more likely to see Corbyn joining ISIS or Hamas than anything to do with the British forces.

Deluded comment.

...not really Dav, you can say well done all you want but I just think it is pretty shameful to suggest Damien is serving when he isn't.
It's little more than a bit of a jolly playing at dressing up. As pointed out above, he also went missing for the vote on increasing armed forces pay last year... so much for "well done".

Wherever Corbyn turns up it's always to slag off Britain and to promote evil causes (like the Iran regime, IRA, Hamas, Hezbullah, and Socialist -starving - Venezuela, etc.). He's a traitorous joke.

It's supposed to be 22 days. I highly doubt I personally could get an actual taste of Army life by inspecting some vehicles and a couple of classes over 2 days. I wonder how many actual hours it was?
6 weeks basic training would be far better to give them idea.

In my view a bit more relevant than when Lib Dem favourite John Pugh went down the toilet to see why investment is need in the London sewers....unless it was a metaphor for how he and his chums watched Southport go down the toilet whilst they released mindless sound bites. The new lib guy is shaping up to be exactly the same in my view.
